Frequently Asked Questions

How can I become a reading group member?
Email the reading group facilitator for the group you'd like to join. You must join by July 31 of any given year. After that date, we encourage you to participate in other ways (see below) until the new year begins again in March.

What does it mean to be a reading group member?
Reading group members are the only people who may nominate and vote for books. At the meetings following our summer and winter ballots, the reading group members convene and decide which titles they'd like to keep or drop.

Can I still participate if I'm not a member?
Absolutely! You may join the listserv, attend meetings, and discuss any book you've read either online or in person. The only thing you can't do is vote or nominate.

Can I just drop in on a meeting?
Yes, we welcome any and all visitors! During the book discussion, you are welcome to comment on any titles under consideration that you have read.

How do I sign up for the listserv?
Go to our website here: http://www.capitolchoices.org/contact.asp. You may choose either the broadcast-only listserv (good for keeping up with nominations and agendas) or the working listserv (recommended for reading group members and anyone who wants to comment online).

How do I log on to the Members Page?
Only reading group members have access to the Members Page. Your name is your login, and the password is changed each year. Contact your reading group facilitator or cparr@crrl.org for the current password.

Can anyone nominate a book?
Only members can nominate books. Nominations are made through the Nomination Form found on our Members Page.

I want to submit a book for consideration. How do I do that?
We welcome books and audiobooks from the current publishing year suitable for infants through the high school years. Send submissions to:
    Kristi Jemtegaard
    Capitol Choices
    Arlington County Department of Libraries
    1015 N. Quincy St.
    Arlington, VA 22201

How are books chosen for the final Capitol Choices list?
Members nominate throughout the year. A summer ballot winnows the list initially, and a winter ballot is held at the end of the year. At the final meeting of the year, the reading groups convene to consider the winter ballot results and recommend their top twenty-five titles for inclusion on the list.
